Homemade Electrolytes and Benefits

Electrolytes are essential for maintaining proper hydration, especially for those following a low-carb or keto diet, athletes, or individuals engaged in regular physical activity.

While store-bought electrolyte solutions are readily available, making your DIY electrolyte drink can be cost-effective and customizable to your specific needs.

Store bought electrolyte drinks like electrolyte water, sports drinks, coconut water with added lemon juice or lime juice, and Himalayan salt have flooded the market. However, they are all so expensive and, truthfully, not for any good reason. Many of them do not contain expensive ingredients at all.

I wanted to create an electrolyte drink recipe that was cheap (it is so cheap to make it is ridiculous), and easy.

The ingredients needed to be accessible and easy to source for everyone worldwide to access. The recipe is also gluten free, sugar free (including no natural sugars like honey, fruits, or maple syrup) and can be enjoyed during intermittent fasting.

Since launching Keto Mojo in 2021, the electrolyte recipe has been enormously popular. Our active Facebook Community have been praising how much more energy they have, less brain fog, and able to fast longer. If you have tried it and love it please leave a comment in the comments below and let others know of the benefits you have felt since making the change to our DIY electrolytes.

What are the Benefits of Drinking Natural Electrolytes?

Consuming electrolyte drinks is essential for maintaining hydration and supporting overall health, especially in certain situations such as intense physical activity, hot weather, illness, or following a low-carb or keto diet. Here are several reasons why consuming electrolyte drinks is beneficial:

  1. Rehydration: Electrolyte drinks help replenish fluids and electrolytes lost through sweating during exercise or hot weather. Electrolytes like sodium, potassium, and magnesium are crucial for maintaining the body’s fluid balance.
  2. Electrolyte Balance: Electrolytes are minerals that carry an electric charge and play a vital role in various bodily functions, including nerve transmission, muscle contraction, and maintaining pH balance. Consuming electrolyte drinks helps with electrolyte imbalance, preventing dehydration, muscle cramps, and restless legs.
  3. Energy Levels: Proper hydration and electrolyte balance are essential for sustaining energy levels and preventing fatigue, especially during prolonged physical activity or strenuous exercise.
  4. Prevention of Heat-Related Illness: In hot weather or high-intensity workouts, excessive sweating can lead to electrolyte imbalances and dehydration, increasing the risk of heat exhaustion or heatstroke. Electrolyte drinks help prevent these heat-related illnesses by replenishing lost fluids and minerals.
  5. Support for Low-Carb or Keto Diets: Following a low-carb or keto diet can lead to increased water loss and electrolyte excretion, especially during the initial stages of adaptation (keto flu). Electrolyte drinks can help mitigate symptoms such as fatigue, headaches, and muscle cramps by replenishing electrolytes like sodium, potassium, and magnesium.
  6. Improved Athletic Performance: Adequate hydration and electrolyte balance are crucial for optimizing athletic performance. Electrolyte drinks can help athletes maintain hydration levels, delay fatigue, and sustain endurance during training or competition.
  7. Faster Recovery: Consuming electrolyte drinks post-exercise or illness can aid in faster recovery by replenishing lost fluids and electrolytes, reducing muscle soreness, and supporting the body’s recovery processes.

Homemade Electrolyte Drink and Exclusivity

Recipe Source: The Keto Mojo Electrolytes recipe is exclusively available in the Keto Mojo cookbook or Keto Mojo eBook. The recipe is not included in our of our other keto cookbooks or 365 Membership. It is not available separately for purchase.

As I often say, the eBook (or cookbook) is less than the average cost of store bought electrolytes. So, the book is a great way to save and have the best electrolyte drink recipe on hand. We have literally saved thousands of dollars by making our own over the past years.

The Ingredients

The ingredients for homemade electrolytes are easily accessible from your local supermarket. However, the ingredients used will not be shared online. It is good to know they are all supermarket-friendly ingredients, so it’s easy to make your own homemade electrolyte drink. It is simply mixed with water or soda water, or you can even add the electrolyte powder to gummies or smoothies if you prefer.

In chats with customers from across the globe we haven’t found anyone who has had difficulty purchasing them.

The standard powdered electrolyte mixture has the nutritional values below. There are no additional added supplements. The mixture contains no sweeteners of any kind. The electrolytes can be consumed throughout the day and during intermittent fasting times.

How To Use Electrolyte Powders

I mix mine with soda water. I use a 64oz insulated Yeti Rambler and fill it up with almost 2 litres of soda water, ice and 3 teaspoons (or 1 tablespoon) of electrolytes. I may drink 1-2 of these per day. The amount you consume will vary. If you are the kind of person always running around or very active, then you will likely have more than I do. The standard recipe makes 6 serves, and it is 1 teaspoon to 1 cup of liquid. I make it in bulk as it makes it so easy when there are two of us drinking it constantly.

Flavouring Electrolytes

Mix it with water if you prefer a flat drink or mix it with soda water.

Add extra sodium to make it more salty if you need it, or add sweetened drops like Vital Zing Drops for extra flavour.

Electrolytes can be flavoured with extracts, spices, sugar-free cordial (added to the water), flavoured magnesium powder, flavoured protein waters, or flavoured collagens. The options are endless. I prefer mine with no flavour added or I simply add Magnesium with citrus flavour.

Note: When choosing any flavourings to add to the electrolytes mixture or your glass of electrolytes check the nutritional labels of what you are adding. Many flavourings, especially flavoured collagen or protein powders, contain calories and carbs. This can break a fast, autophagy, and potentially knock you out of the fat-burning zone during a fasting window.

1. Is the electrolytes recipe exclusive to Keto Mojo?
Yes, the ingredients list used in the Keto Mojo recipe is exclusive to the cookbook or eBook. They aim to provide unique and effective electrolyte solutions.

2. Are sweeteners added to homemade electrolytes?
No, the Keto Mojo Electrolytes contain zero sweeteners. This distinguishes them from many store-bought options and ensures a pure natural electrolytes solution.

3. Can additional supplements be added to homemade electrolytes?
Yes, additional supplements can be added to suit your needs. I add extra supplements from time to time, including the list below. These are supplements I have tried in the mixtures. When choosing magnesium powders please be mindful that some do contain sweeteners. In my opinion, you do not need any sweetener at all in the electrolytes. Please note these are not essential and not part of the electrolyte mixture in Keto Mojo.

Consulting with a medical practitioner before adding supplements is recommended.

4. How much does making electrolytes at home cost per serve?
Store-bought electrolytes can cost $60-$80 for 30 servings.

Keto Mojo Electrolytes cost approximately $0.08 AUD per serve for the basic recipe. Additional flavors or supplements may slightly increase the cost, but they remain significantly cheaper than store-bought options.

Benefits of Homemade Electrolytes

  1. Cost-Effective: Homemade electrolytes are much more affordable than store-bought options, saving you money in the long run.
  2. Customizable: You have full control over the ingredients, allowing you to tailor the electrolyte solution to your specific needs and preferences.
  3. No Added Sweeteners: Unlike many commercial electrolyte products, homemade versions contain no added sweeteners, making them a healthier choice.
  4. Versatile Usage: Homemade electrolyte solutions can be used for everyday hydration, during exercise, or to replenish electrolytes lost during illness.

How to Store Homemade Electrolytes

Store in an airtight jar. I make mine in approximately 1 kilogram batches and store in screw-top plastic jars. I add a silica gel sachet (or two) to the jars.

Making electrolytes at home saves money and ensures a clean and effective hydration solution. Remember to consult with a healthcare professional before making any significant changes to your diet or supplementation routine. With the right ingredients and knowledge, you can enjoy the benefits of homemade electrolytes for an improved lifestyle and performance.
