This Honey Mustard Chicken Salad puts a flavorful spin on the regular ol’ chicken salad by adding a delicious honey mustard dressing! Tender shredded chicken gets tossed in the salad dressing along with crunchy celery and onion for a flavorful meal, whether it’s in a sandwich, wrap, or served on its own.

Chicken salad is one of my all-time favorites for a quick summer lunch that packs on the protein. As I kept exploring with flavors, I realized that a honey mustard sauce would taste PHENOMENAL. So, here we are, and let me tell you… it’s got all the sweet, spicy, and tangy flavors to make the BEST honey mustard chicken salad you’ve ever tried.

Ready in 15 minutes, all you have to do is mix together your dressing ingredients and then toss it with everything else. It’s a fantastic meal prep recipe, and a great way to use up leftover chicken, whether you roast it at home or buy a rotisserie chicken from the store.

What’s In Honey Mustard Chicken Salad

  • 2% Greek yogurt: This will be used as the base for our creamy dressing. It also adds on even more protein!
  • Mayonnaise: Mayo gives us that rich, creamy texture that we loooove in this dressing.
  • Dijon mustard: Spicy, tangy, and so flavorful. A little dijon goes a long way!
  • Honey: The sweet component in the honey mustard dressing.
  • Lemon juice: Adds a nice tang and creates a perfect balance of flavor.
  • Shredded chicken: We used shredded rotisserie chicken to keep this recipe easy and convenient.
  • Celery: Adds a crunchy texture and freshness to the salad.
  • White onion: Adds a little bite and sharpness to this salad for the perfect bite.

Choosing Shredded Chicken

Every good chicken salad begins with shredded chicken. Feel free to make your own or buy store-bought or use rotisserie chicken (what we did when testing this recipe!).

If you’d like to make your own shredded chicken, we have a handful of tutorials to help you out:

#1 Pro Tip: If you make your own shredded chicken, make sure to chill the chicken before mixing it with the rest of the ingredients.

Ingredient Swaps + Add-Ins

Chicken salad is made for experimenting, so don’t be afraid to get creative with your ingredients! Here are some ideas:

Protein: You can use pre-cooked chicken or make your own in the oven, stovetop, or Instapot. Some crispy bacon sprinkled in would taste amazing in this salad too!

Avocado: Add in some avocado slices for extra creaminess and healthy fats.

Dried cranberries: For a burst of sweetness, toss in some dried cranberries or other dried fruit.

Bell peppers: For more color and crunch, add some diced bell peppers.

Crunchy almonds: For a nutty crunch, add some sliced almonds or other nuts of your choice.

Onions: If you’re not a fan of white onion, substitute for green onion or red onion for a milder flavor.

Pro Tips for Honey Mustard Chicken Salad

Use leftover chicken: Leftover chicken works great for any chicken salad recipe, whether it’s from a previous meal or store-bought rotisserie chicken. It’s a great way to use up any leftovers!

Adjust the dressing to your taste: If you’re not a fan of tangy dressings, reduce the amount of lemon juice or Dijon mustard. If you prefer a sweeter dressing, add in more honey.

Serve it chilled: For the best flavor and texture, let the chicken salad chill in the fridge for at least 30 minutes before serving.
